Provincial & District Grand Lodges represent Grand Lodge at a more local intermediate level, providing structural oversight across regional borders.
In Scotland, Provincial Grand Lodges have oversight of particular geographical areas which, in the main, are based on counties. Although geographical boundaries roughly coincide with those of local government, this is not always the case.
District Grand Lodges fulfill the same function as Provincial Grand Lodges outwith Scotland. These overseas bodies require a slightly different kind of supervision, because District Grand Lodges generally supervise a much larger physical footprint than a typical domestic Provincial Grand Lodge within Scotland.
